My first impression of the Lisbon Hebrew Bible is that it is exquisite. The patterns and color on the cover are very pleasing to the eye. The individual pages are also captivating with their different colors and designs.
The white background of the page is in contrast to the dark text. The darker colors present in the borders seem to come alive next to the white background. Repetition occurs throughout the manuscript in floral motifs displayed as borders. Although all of the borders are not the same size or used in the same way, they are present on almost every page. Red boxes containing gold text are also repeated as headings within the columns. The text is always aligned within the border. Some of the pages have text aligned in columns while other pages are aligned in the center of the page. All text is aligned in very neat rows, although there are no lines on the paper. Although text may be separated into columns, it is always grouped as a whole. Text is in proximity of other text and not placed outside of the border.
This manuscript uses different techniques to indicate its importance. The repetition of the Star of David on the front cover indicates that it is a sacred work. The text is aligned and consistent throughout the work. The borders are intricate and ever present. I think the use of gold in the pages would also be an indicator of importance. The time and effort put forth to compile this manuscript is amazing, but obviously worth the effort.
